A holistic therapy that looks to treat the whole person on all levels - physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects - not just the area of immediate concern which is often seen as a symptom to a deeper cause.
Shiatsu is a combination of oriental energy medicine theories of understanding the body and modern understanding of anatomy and physiology which supports and strengthens the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself. When used correctly Shiatsu is useful for emotional pain as well as physical pain and has psychological benefits, including improving self confidence.
This gentle yet powerful form of bodywork is based on pressure and stretches. Fingers, thumbs and palms and sometimes elbows, knees and feet are used on acupressure points to support and strengthen the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself. Massage, rotations and stretching of joints, used alone or combined, are also an important part of the therapy.
Shiatsu works on the body's vital life force energy, known as 'Qi' in Japanese and 'Chi' in Chinese. which flows through the body along energy channels known as meridians; each meridian governs a particular physical and emotional function in the body. For many reasons the energy can stop flowing freely along the channels; this can then produce symptoms and eventually disease.
The aim of Shiatsu is to address the cause of an imbalance rather than focusing on symptoms alone; symptoms are seen as evidence of an energetic imbalance. Re-balancing the healthy flow of energy has a powerful effect on health and well-being and thus helps the body to heal from injuries and illness.
In reality Shiatsu is so difficult to describe and really you just need 'to try it'! You will not be disappointed!
Most importantly treatments are safe and always specific to the individual on the day of the treatment.
Shiatsu is suitable for both acute or chronic debilitating symptoms and illness. Shiatsu is equally suitable for anyone wishing to maintain or enhance their health.
